Description

Hydra Greece | Hydra’s Guns – 19.8 cm x 29 cm by Gregory Christeas is a very personal work inspired by Hydra, where he spent his teenage summers in the 1960s. During those formative years, he sold his early works at the tourist shop of his childhood friend Mimis Drakopoulos, one of the first original Greek woven products shops on Hydra. Later, after his art show at the ‘Cultural Olympiad in Athens 2004,’ Mimis invited Gregory to stay on the island for several years, allowing him to deepen his connection with the landscapes, history, and people of Hydra, Greece.

In this piece, the island’s historic cannons—Hydra’s Guns—overlook the sea, symbols of resilience, vigilance, and cultural memory. Christeas uses black lines and bursts of color to merge past and present, striking a balance between architectural precision and emotional resonance. Every brushstroke is the legacy and the spirit of Hydra, Greece.
