Island Aigina St. Nicholas – Early Greek Island Series (1960–1980) Original Painting by Gregory Christeas

21 × 29.5 cm (8.3″ × 11.6″)

About the Artwork & Greek Island Paintings 1960–1980

Island Aigina St. Nicholas is an original mid-century work from Gregory Christeas’ formative years living and painting along the Aegean coast. Made available directly from the artist’s private vault for collectors and institutions seeking rare, historic works, this piece comes signed by Gregory Christeas with certified historical provenance, a Certificate of Authenticity, and well packed & insured worldwide shipping. Measuring 21 × 29.5 cm (8.3″ × 11.6″), this artwork is rendered with ink and acrylics on acid-free heavyweight paper.

This original modern painting is inspired by the historic Church of St. Nicholas the Thalassinos, built in 1693, the iconic whitewashed chapel that greets every traveler arriving by sea to Aegina. Known as the protector of sailors, St. Nicholas symbolizes faith, resilience, and safe passage. Unlike standard Greek churches with framed icons, its tiny cave-like interior features direct wall frescoes of various saints. Gregory Christeas captures the church’s timeless beauty, rich 17th-century heritage, and maritime spirit through horizontal bands of intense cobalt blue, deep purple, and sun-warmed yellow, layered with delicate architectural ink linework outlining the seaside domes.

Created during two transformative decades (1960–1980), these early works capture the pristine light, vibrant atmosphere, and traditional coastal sanctuaries of vintage Greece. They form the vital historic bridge leading into Christeas’ later full-scale abstract movement, retaining the authentic essence of 20th-century Mediterranean modernism.

Historic Context & Collector Provenance

Each painting from this formative 1960–1980 archival period highlights the artist’s deep spiritual connection to maritime Greece and the Aegean Sea. These early compositions preserve the architectural purity of island chapels and fishing harbors before rapid modern expansion. For collectors of contemporary European art and Greek Diaspora heritage, these foundational works represent an irreplaceable era in modern Greek art history.

Gregory Christeas is an established Greek American master artist whose multi-decade career spans major international milestones, including a landmark solo exhibition of 125 works during the Cultural Olympiad Athens 2004.
