About the Artwork & Waterfront Series

Likavitos original abstract painting by Gregory Christeas is an industrial-oil work on canvas painted in Greece. It combines expressive color and movement with personal memories of resistance to the Greek dictatorship that began in 1967.

The title refers to Mount Lycabettus in Athens. Layers of blue, violet, yellow, red, and white rise and intersect across the canvas, suggesting energy, struggle, renewal, and the continuing movement of history. Likavitos was featured in Gregory Christeas’ landmark Art and Freedom exhibition at the Cultural Olympiad Athens 2004.

The work transforms the artist’s experience of resistance into an affirmation of democracy and freedom. Each energetic mark carries memory forward while honoring those who sacrificed for Greece’s eventual return to democracy.

Gregory Christeas creates infinite abstract forms that transform like a wandering spirit in search of the realization of beauty. The Waterfront Series was developed over decades of exploring Abstract Expressionism, capturing light, water, architecture, and movement into layered compositions.

The Waterfront technique became the birthplace of the Parallels Series. Many works in this collection, including Likavitos, were featured in landmark international exhibitions, giving them significant and verifiable provenance.

By applying industrial pigments in multiple layers, Christeas creates bright fields where color and texture become structural, tangible elements. His paintings reveal radiant layers that balance chaos and serenity, transforming raw emotion into visual poetry.
