The Waterfront Series began with Christeas’ observations of shifting reflections along the New York waterfront. Light, water, glass, architecture, and urban movement were transformed into layered abstraction, creating compositions that feel both fluid and structural.

From these observations, Christeas developed what became known as the Waterfront technique. Vertical and horizontal parallel lines emerge gently within the compositions, cutting through and organizing the larger forms while allowing color, reflection, and movement to remain active across the surface.

Christeas later applied the Waterfront technique to subjects and memories beyond New York. Greece, resistance, democracy, personal history, travel, and South Dakota’s Badlands entered the work, expanding its emotional and historical range.

The Waterfront technique became the birthplace of the Parallels Series. Over the following 25 years, the quiet parallel lines moving through the Waterfront compositions gradually developed into a more powerful relationship between line, form, color, structure, and movement.

Many works in this collection were created with industrial oils on canvas. Selected paintings were featured in the landmark Art and Freedom exhibition at the Cultural Olympiad Athens 2004, giving them significant and verifiable exhibition history.
